Fair Contracts Campaign Wins Secure Livelihoods

Posted 21 November 2011 by Alex White (Vic Division)

NTEU’s Fair Contracts campaign has won more conversions for fixed term staff into ongoing positions in recent days. Under threat of costly prosecutions, Swinburne senior management have had to convert a further eight TAFE contract staff into ongoing positions. All these staff are members of NTEU.

This was on top of other conversions  to more secure positions for NTEU members in recent months in TAFE, FBE, FEIS and FICT. “The feeling of security such a change brings is enormous, especially in the uncertain times faced by some parts of the higher education industry.” Said Elliott Bauer, one of the those who have had their contracts converted.

Only days before staff won secure work the University was refusing to even discuss our call for conversion to ongoing jobs for these members. Securing the livelihoods for another 8 families shows the impact our union is having at Swinburne. Together we can achieve even more - and we have! As this newsletter goes to print another NTEU member in the Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Science is being converted from fixed term to ongoing.

In 2009 union members campaigned to limit the use of fixed term contracts at Swinburne and all other universities across Australia. In March 2010 these limits were made law in the Union Collective Agreement between Swinburne senior management and your union, NTEU. In 2010 NTEU won conversions for all non-management positions at SSAA - over 15 positions converted to ongoing, and almost all were NTEU members.

NTEU continues to fight for other members to secure ongoing work. We are now also turning our attention to sessional staff and improving their job security. NTEU has forced senior management to implement Early Career Development Fellowships - 2 year teaching and research positions for sessional staff. We think we can do more but we need your help.

If you are a sessional staff member and are prepared to help us campaign for more secure work and better conditions contact us at the NTEU Swinburne office on +8162 or swinburne@nteu.org.au.
