NTEU calls staff meetings in BusEco as disputes lodged
Dedicated staff put the Faculty of Business and Economics some $61 Million in surplus. This makes up well over half the surplus generated by the Faculties of the University and staff should be proud of providing a strong base for other Faculties to grow. This surplus enables a great deal of new knowledge to be generated across Monash University.
Unfortunately, senior management rewards this excellence with the retrospective application of flawed research metrics to academic performance. Numerous staff are now being told they have to justify their research performance against these new and flawed metrics. Remarkably, staff are being offered very large sums of money to leave. This is despite student to staff ratios being very high and other areas of the University claiming financial calamity requires redundancies. NTEU has lodged a dispute with the University and NTEU members will have received separate advice about this and how to respond to requests to attend meetings.
NTEU is holding all-staff meetings over the next week to discuss the best way to achieve the collegial University community we expect. Please attend and encourage your colleagues to attend. While you may not be targeted in the recent emails, we are very concerned that senior management is breaking your Faculty into small groups. Who knows which group will be next? Those with low grant income or with few HDR students? Don’t forget the new criteria are being applied retrospectively.
High teaching loads can make it difficult to attend meetings. NTEU has organised two meetings at Clayton & two meetings at Caulfield to make sure you have an opportunity to participate. NTEU officials are also visiting Peninsula, Berwick and Gippsland to discuss these issues with members and NTEU members at these campuses should contact their NTEU Branch office to discuss particular issues.
These are all Faculty of Business & Economics staff meetings, including for those yet to join NTEU.
