NTEU SUPPORTS WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN 25 NOVEMBER 2011

Posted 11 November 2011 by Jeannie Rea (NTEU National Office)

The 25th November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the White Ribbon has become the symbol for the day.

The White Ribbon Campaign calls on individuals and organisations including - specifically workplaces and universities - to organise events to highlight the importance of speaking out against violence against women, encourages wearing a white ribbon on 25 November and for men to swear an oath:

I SWEAR NEVER TO COMMIT, EXCUSE OR REMAIN SILENT ABOUT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. THIS IS MY OATH.

Click here for details of the campaign and to register support.

The NTEU National Council in October endorsed a motion to promote White Ribbon Day and to encourage members to swear the oath against violence.

NTEU Branches are encouraged to contact your local student union, when you are organising to support this campaign. NUS is a formal partner to the White Ribbon campaign. NTEU National Council also endorsed the substance of the NUS Safe Universities Blueprint dealing with the impact of sexual assault and harassment on women students and their perceptions of safety at universities.

Some universities may also be formally supporting the White Ribbon Campaign. If so it would be good for the Union to join in with any organised events as well.

Pease contact your Branch to find out what is happening locally and feel free to blog and publicise your activities through the union website.
