International Women's Day 2012 at CQU
Find Your Voice
Members and CQU staff on the Rockhampton campus were treated to a morning tea to mark International Women’s Day 2012 (IWD).
Thanks to Nell Salem and Wendy Hillman for planning the event so we could celebrate, and more importantly recognize hard won achievements for women, and that we can do more.
Wendy Hillman from the NTEU CQU Branch addressed the gathering pointing out that women’s inequality is still holding the world back.
In the developing and third world empowering women is a means to ending hunger and poverty. In Australia we can do more to correct existing inequities, for example women earn 17c/$ less than men; women retire with half the superannuation of men; and 1 in 3 women will experience physical violence in their lifetime.
Wendy highlighted a number of milestones in the struggle for equality including lifting the marriage bar so that women no longer had to resign once they married (1966); 1969 legislation introducing equal pay for work of equal value; and 2008 – Quentin Bryce was appointed first female Governor General.
We were left to reflect on what Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, first democratically elected woman in Liberia said after collecting her Nobel diploma and medal at a ceremony in Oslo - "My sisters, my daughters, my friends - find your voice". And that voice for CQUniversity staff can be found by joining the NTEU.
Donations were received to a UN project to support women in the Pacific have economic independence. The money will be used to provide bookkeeping and savings training for 3 women.
