Join the NTEU Contingent at May Day 2011
The NTEU invites you, your family and friends to enjoy a great day out at this year’s May Day celebrations on Sunday 1st May – Esplanade Reserve, Marine Terrace, Fremantle.
Supported by UNIONSWA, with free food, live music and entertainment, face painting and rides for the kids... and even a dog show, this year’s event promises to be great fun for everyone. While enjoying ourselves, we’ll be celebrating 155 years of commemorating the victory in achieving the 8 hour work day in Australia, as well as the ongoing achievements of working people in ensuring fair standards for work.
NTEU elected officials and organisers will be holding a stall at the Esplanade, so come and have a chat to us, catch up on the latest news, and show your solidarity before the traditional May Day march kicks off at 12pm. Look for the big purple NTEU banner!

MAY DAY 2011
MARCH @ 12 noon SHARP - The March begins and travels throughout Fremantle (Norfolk Street, South Terrace & High Street).
The ‘Welcome to Country’ by Dr Richard Walley and company will begin the official ceremonies before UNIONSWA highlight current campaigns.
The guest speaker this year will be the daughter of Paddy Troy, Hazel Butorac.
Paddy Troy (1908 – 1978) was a well known trade unionist with strong links to Fremantle, leading strikes, improving pay and conditions for many workers and helped form the WA Trades and Labor Council in 1963. Active in the peace movement and in supporting the Aboriginal emancipation he was both compassionate and demanding (some say fiery). He lived out his socialist principles in open-handed generosity and constant activity.
Hazel will speak about labour values, the roles unions play and the need for union strength if West Australians are going to achieve fairness in the community for the future.

Browse a variety of interesting union and community group stalls.
Watch the workers (young and young at heart) their families and friends, community and visitors to Fremantle enjoy FREE live entertainment and music, performances, face painting and rides. Old MacDonald’s Travelling Farm will return once again too.
Of course there will be the infamous sausage sizzle.
You may wish to participate in or watch the new dog show hosted by Swish Eveready
Don’t forget to bring your picnic rug and come prepared - slip, slop, slap and don’t forget the sunglasses, although be aware that the Cancer Council’s Sun Smart Van will be in attendance.
