Fight for funds

VICTORIA University has stepped up its fight to reclaim TAFE funding across its campuses in the West.
Staff, students and representatives from the Australian Education Union and National Tertiary Education Union came out in force last week rallying at VU’s Footscray Nicholson campus, calling for the State Government to repeal its decision to cut more than $200 million in TAFE funding Victoria.

SWINBURNE University has been the TAFE worst hit by the State Government’s funding cuts, says the NTEU.
At a rally today, National Tertiary Education Union’s Colin Long told those gathered the TAFE had been the hardest hit in Victoria by this year's funding cuts.

$6m budget cut: GOTAFE DILEMMA: jobs, courses, fees impacted, but agriculture and business staying at Wangaratta

GOULBURN Ovens Institute of TAFE remains tight lipped on the impact a multi-million dollar State Government funding cut will have on staffing, student fees and courses next year.
While GOTAFE itself will not confirm the extent of the cut, Kaye Darveniza (MLC, Northern Victoria) has told the Wangaratta Chronicle it is $6 million, and will "likely bring job losses, student fee hikes and the abolishment of courses".

East Gippsland arts community brace for TAFE cuts

The East Gippsland arts community are bracing for the ripple effects of recent funding cuts to Advance TAFE and the Community College, Bairnsdale.
With more job losses and course closures to come in the local arts education sector, members of the arts community believe that the cuts are a step backwards for East Gippsland's recent ambitions to push Bairnsdale as a cultural destination.

Swinburne plans to fund a new building on its main Hawthorn campus with money raised by selling off part of its Prahran site, the university revealed today.
Swinburne vice-chancellor Linda Kristjanson has detailed the extent of funding cuts that have forced the university to close TAFE courses and make hundreds of jobs redundant.

Swinburne is banking on the eventual sale of parts of its campus in Melbourne’s up-market Prahran to help fund a new building on its main Hawthorn campus leaving the outlook for its performance arts program uncertain.
In the wake of the Victorian government’s vocation training and TAFE cuts Swinburne has already said it will close its Lilydale campus, dump a host of courses and shift its Prahran-based faculty of design to Hawthorn in 2014.

PRAHRAN MP Clem Newton-Brown has lashed out at Swinburne University’s plans to sell part of the Prahran campus.
In a letter to the National Tertiary Education Union Swinburne’s vice-chancellor Linda Kristjanson states Swinburne will be "working through the approved Victorian Government processes for asset disposals and reinvestment with respect to the parts of the Prahran campus which are not required, so that Swinburne can reinvest the proceeds for the benefit of current and future students’’.

Students and teachers at RMIT TAFE in the city today sent a clear message to Premier Ted Baillieu that his funding cuts to TAFEs will have serious consequences into the future, Shadow Minister for Skills and Apprenticeships Steve Herbert said today.
The Australian Education Union today held a rally at RMIT TAFE’s city campus to protest against the $290 million cuts to TAFEs by the Baillieu Government.

Restaurant keeps its doors open

Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE confirmed its popular Waratah Training Restaurant would remain open, despite being impacted by the State Government's $300 million budget cut to Victoria's TAFE sector.
