PALESTINE SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN FILM SCREENING: BUDRUS
It takes a village to unite the most divided people on earth. An award-winning feature documentary film about a Palestinian community organiser, Ayed Morrar, who unites local Fatah and Hamas members along with Israeli supporters in an unarmed movement to save his village of Budrus from destruction by Israel's apartheid wall. Success eludes them until his 15-year-old daughter, Iltezam, launches a women's contingent that quickly moves to the front lines. Struggling side by side, father and daughter unleash an inspiring, yet little-known movement in the occupied Palestinian territories that is still gaining ground today. Entry by donation. 7pm. LUNCHBOX / SOAPBOX: JAMES BOYCE ON THE TRUTH ABOUT MELBOURNE
De Tocqueville claimed that all places “bear some mark of their origin; and the circumstances which accompanied their birth… affect the whole term of their being.” On the day that his new book 1835: the Founding of Melbourne and the Conquest of Australia is to be launched, James Boyce will introduce you to the forgotten founding fathers of Melbourne, and encourage speculation on how the unique circumstances of Melbourne’s birth might impact on how the city imagines itself today. NAIDOC MARCH: WILLIAM COOPER - EQUAL RIGHTS STILL A FIGHT
March for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. Today NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields. 10am sharp. RALLY: CLOSE BROADMEADOWS DETENTION CENTRE! CHILDREN OUT OF DETENTION!
Meet @ Kmart carpark, corner Sydney Rd & Camp Road, Campbelfield, at 1 pm. Speakers followed by march to Broadmeadows detention centre (Melbourne Immigration Transit Accomodation). The Refugee Action Collective (Victoria) is urging refugee supporters to hold Labor to account for not releasing all children from detention. No child should be locked behind fences for the ‘crime’ of seeking asylum. We need to publically oppose locking children up and send a message to the Labor government that we’re not going to be silent whilst they commit the real crime, locking up refugees. Victoria University and the ACTU are hosting a forum, which will discuss the diversity of women’s experiences and the innovative ways women workers and unionists are building the future of feminist politics within local and global union movements. Transnational experiences will focus on union feminists mobilizing at multiple sites, issues of wages and equity, child care campaigns, work-life balance, and queer organizing. IS VICTORIA BECOMING A POLICE STATE?
Public meeting with Rob Stary (civil rights lawyer) & Amanda George (prisoners' rights activist). Since the Baillieu government was elected, the only policy it seems prepared to spend money on is 'law and order': Armed guards on stations, longer sentences, more prisoners, more jails, a new riot squad and on-the-spot fines for swearing in public. This is despite crime rates actually decreasing. The issues that are really making people's lives hard (such as underfunded or non-existent health services, overcrowded public transport; traffic jams; and increasing electricity and water bills) are being deliberately ignored. 6:30pm (meal 6pm). SPEAK OUT FOR LEX WOTTON'S POLITICAL FREEDOM!
One year ago Lex Wotton was released from jail after serving two years behind bars as a political prisoner. Lex got a 6-year sentence after being found guilty of riot after a justified community protest against the death in custody of Mulrunji Doomadgee. In contrast, Chris Hurley, the police officer responsible for the death in custody, has been promoted and compensated. While Lex is free, he remains politically muzzled by harsh parole conditions, which deny him the right to speak to the media or to attend public meetings. 12:30pm.
