Informatics Dispute

Posted 20 August 2012 by Sean O'Brien (Macquarie University)

Dear Informatics members and non-members

You should be aware that NTEU notified a dispute on your behalf about what  we claim was the preemptive decision of University Management to advertise an Application Support Manager position. We say this position is a core part of the foreshadowed centralisation process and restructure and therefore should be part of the managing change consultation process with you.

NTEU met with Management representatives this morning in an attempt to resolve the dispute under the dispute settling procedures of your Professional Staff Agreement. We spent the first part of the meeting pointing out that management was effectively breaching the dispute settlement procedures of our agreement, by continuing to advertise the position one week after a dispute had first  been notified. We had sought to have the advertisement withdrawn as part of our dispute notice and this has not occurred.

NTEU argued that this position was central to the new structure and should therefore be subject to consultation. We argued that members should be given the opportunity to comment on the position and the position description. Also, because there may be redundancies arising from the Informatics restructure, we argued that internal staff should have first opportunity to secure this position.

Management continued to maintain that the position of Applications Manager had been previously discussed with staff and that it was not necessary to have it subject to the managing change consultation process. They produced some documentation from the Wiki which canvassed the Applications Manager position. NTEU does not believe this to constitute genuine consultation. NTEU continues to seek to have this position withdrawn . Management have not been prepared to do this at this stage. We are expecting a further response from Management early next week and we will keep you posted on progress.

Yours in Union

[ 0 ] If the university had open tenders for IT equipment and software (i.e. functional specification and not brand preselected) they would have plenty of money left over to pay for support staff, and even hire some more faculty.
