National Insecure Work Inquiry begins in Brisbane
Yesterday the Howe Indpendent Inquiry into Insecure Work began as the first of twenty three locations around Australia. QLD Division Secretary, Margaret Lee, and two casual academics appeared before the Inquiry to detail the NTEU's experiences of insecure work with a particular emphasis on casual employment. See here for more details.
The Brisbane Times reports that university academic Marianne Treuen told the inquiry she had not had paid annual leave since 1995. She had also been forced to work at several universities around southeast Queensland just to make ends meet. During holiday periods she had no income at all.
‘‘My husband supports me. Isn’t that a terrible thing to say?’’ she said. ‘‘But that’s what it comes down to.’’
