NTEU Update on Collective Bargaining - 10 November

Posted 26 November 2009 by Teresa Marshall (Flinders University)

NTEU UPDATE ON COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AND INDUSTRIAL ACTION - 10 NOVEMBER

Further bargaining meeting with University scheduled

In addition to the two bargaining meetings scheduled this week dealing with general staff (11 November) and academic issues (13 November) a further Formal Negotiating meeting has been scheduled for 17 November.

Members will receive an update as soon as possible after the 17 November meeting.

Implementing the bans

Thank you to members who have provided advice that they are implementing bans and which bans they are implementing. Please let us know if you have not already done so, if you are implementing the bans.

The NTEU would like to clarify that all bans are in place and any members undertaking the bans are engaging in legally protected action under the Fair Work Act provisions.

In relation to the ban on recording and transmission to the University of assessment and exam results, the practical effect of the ban will not take effect until exam results are due.

Exemptions Committee formed

Flinders NTEU has now formed an Exemptions Committee to consider and approve requests for exemptions to the ban on transmission of exam results to ensure there is no undue hardship or endangerment of student welfare.

Also, the NTEU is liaising with the Students Association about the bans.

Meanwhile at Swinburne....

The NTEU at Swinburne University of Technology is close to reaching agreement on a new Collective Agreement which contains the following proposals:

  • $1,000 sign on bonus + 16% salary increase fully paid by March 2012

  • separate payment for marking by casual academics

  • no introduction of a trimester academic year during the life of the agreement

  • cap on casual employment

  • limit of 16 weeks on the use of casuals and must offer a fixed term contract otherwise
