MEDIA RELEASE: NTEU Newcastle congratulates new Uni students for 2012 & calls for increases in University funding

Posted 20 January 2012 by Jenny Whittard (University of Newcastle)

The Newcastle Branch of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) congratulates all year 12 graduates and mature age applicants who have gained a first round offer at the University of Newcastle for 2012.

We particularly applaud those students who are the first in their family to enter university, and applaud the widening of opportunities for a university education with the expansion of places.

NTEU pledges that we will do our best to ensure that students' aspirations for success are met. Our members, whether they are academic or non-teaching staff, are committed professionals who work diligently to ensure that students receive the best education and university experience possible.

We are confident that the University will ensure all students are provided with the learning environment they need to progress through their course, including being able to match the increase in students with an increase in staff.

The Government now has the opportunity to support the University in expanding staff numbers and to address previous inadequacies in funding in its consideration of the recommendations of the Base Funding Review released late last year.
