Back to NSW Division

Thank you

Posted 18 December 2012 by Genevieve Kelly (NSW Division)

As another year draws to a close, I have been thinking about the commitment NTEU members demonstrate to higher education.

Together this year we have fought for workplaces where higher education workers are securely employed, and treated with dignity and respect. This is an ongoing struggle, but we have had a number of victories that give cause for celebration.

We’ve successfully campaigned against job cuts at a number of institutions, significantly inhibiting management’s plans and demonstrating the power of staff. Together, we are providing a visible challenge to the managerialism that has crept into our sector in recent years.

We have fought to protect and enforce our rights, winning a number of victories across the state. Some of these include saving the holidays at UTS, gaining more secure employment for casuals at UWS, achieving workload justice at CSU, converting fixed-term staff to ongoing employment at SCU, defending staff privacy at Macquarie and protecting pay and conditions for casuals at UNSW.

We were also active participants in the ACTU insecure work enquiry, providing evidence around the impact of insecurity in our sector. And, through the UNSW Branch, NTEU voices were heard during a parliamentary inquiry into workplace bullying.

2012 has been a big year for NTEU NSW—and as a result we have grown. Your colleagues are seeing the work we are all doing together and joining with you in the Union.

As we head back into Enterprise Bargaining across NSW, we are in a much stronger position.

It has been a privilege to be part of a growing Union, one that campaigns for a quality higher education system with collegial and inclusive workplaces where staff and students are treated with respect.

I want to thank all NTEU members for their work this year in support of that vision. I look forward to continuing this work together in 2013.
