Corporatisation and Australian Universities in the Spotlight at Washington Conference

9 June 2000

NTEU President Carolyn Allport will present a paper dealing with the corporatisation of Australian Universities at a major conference in Washington this weekend.

Dr Allport was invited to the Conference, `Intellectual Workers and Essential Freedoms’ by its organizers, the American Association of University Professors and the Newspaper Guild/Communications Workers of America. Her paper, entitled `Paying the Price: Universities and Corporate Futures’, is particularly timely given this week’s airing of a program analyzing Melbourne University’s float of Melbourne IT by ABC TV’s Four Corners.

She will also participate in an international panel discussing issues relating to corporatisation of universities, globalisation and intellectual freedom. Dr Allport said that university staff all over the world are watching with interest and concern the deregulatory agenda of the Australian Government in relation to university funding and governance.

For a copy of Dr Allport’s paper, please contact Maree Critchley, NTEU National Office, Tel. 03 9254 1910 or email mcritchley@nteu.org.au
