Higher Education: An Election Issue in Corangamite
13 September 2001
NTEU National President Dr Carolyn Allport will visit Geelong today to discuss higher education policy with members at Deakin University.
Higher Education policy will be brought into focus during the Federal Election, and Dr Allport hopes that the critical role of Deakin University in the region is recognised by all political parties.
Deakin plays a crucial role in the region and is the most popular choice of university among Western District students. Federal Government policy has hurt Deakin. A 6.64% real cut in funding since 1996 has meant that Deakins excellent work in servicing the region is made that bit harder. Dr Allport said.
Each year, over 860 students leave the Barwon Region to study. Dr Allport says that by strengthening the position of the Waurn Ponds and Waterfront campuses, it would be better able to meet local needs.
Dr. Allport said that the NTEU campaign would focus on the South West region, and would therefore focus on the educational infrastructure in the Federal Electorates of Corio, Corangamite and Wannon.
We need to emphasise the importance of collaboration between the campuses in the region, and the importance of linkages between education institutions, the community and industry. We will therefore be working to influence candidates in Corangamite, Corio and Wannon, so that the educational needs of the region are given priority in the election.
The purpose of our meeting with members today is to build a campaign around Deakins role within the region. All political parties need to pay closer attention to the needs of regions, to listen to what local communities say, and to respond with real financial commitments. Deakin University needs adequate government support to build closer linkages with the community and industry so it can more effectively contribute to the future of the region. Dr Allport concluded.
