A new start with a new Minister
23 November 2001
The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) welcomed the Prime Ministers announcement of the new Ministries today.
NTEU welcomes the appointment of Dr Brendan Nelson as Minister in the new portfolio of Education, Training and Science. Dr Nelson comes to the Ministry with a rich experience in public and private health. Dr Nelson has also chaired a House of Representatives Inquiry into technical education and training. We look forward to a new start, with a new Minister. said Dr Carolyn Allport.
Education will continue to be important for our nation, and we wish Dr Nelson well in securing broad community support to ensure that we can lift our education performance comparative to other nations within the OECD.
We also send our good wishes to Peter McGauran, the new Minister for Science. Minister McGauran has had some previous experience as Minister for Industry, Science and Resources. It was pleasing to see the inclusion of Science into the new portfolio, and the establishment of a junior ministry for Science, thus enabling stronger links to be made between education, training and research. said Dr Allport.
However, the new portfolio will need to establish good co-ordination with industry and employment in order to ensure that education also links with innovation, employment and economic growth.
NTEU looks forward to working productively with both Ministers in this important portfolio.
