University and Union settle dispute over sacked academic whistleblower
The National Tertiary Education Union and Associate Professor Ted Steele have settled their dispute with the University of Wollongong over the Universitys illegal sacking of Dr. Steele following his public claims of soft marking practices at the University.The University dismissed Dr. Steele in February 2001. His dismissal was found by the Federal Court to be a breach of the Enterprise Agreement covering academic staff at the University. He was re-instated by the University in April 2002 but was subsequently charged with misconduct.
A confidential settlement has been reached between the NTEU, Dr. Steele and the University of Wollongong.
As part of that settlement the parties agreed to the release of the following public statement:
Associate Professor Ted Steele, the University of Wollongong and the National Tertiary Education Union have reached an agreement in settlement of the dispute between them. All legal and disciplinary procedures have been terminated as a result of the settlement. The details of the settlement remain confidential and all three parties have agreed to make no further public comment.
