NTEU Calls for Monash Vice Chancellor to Resign
Wednesday 10 July 2002
Monash Branch of NTEU views with grave concern the recent revelations regarding cases of plagiarism in the published work of Vice-Chancellor David Robinson.
In the current hostile economic and industrial climate in which Universities find themselves, NTEU has consistently supported and campaigned for an environment in which the highest academic standards possible are maintained both in teaching and research. We believe that David Robinson has breached these standards in both his academic conduct and the manner in which the University Council and academic community have been misled. In the current climate of punitive university workloads, Professor Robinsons explanation that his actions were due to heavy workload in the 1970s cannot be accepted. There can no longer be any confidence in a Vice Chancellor who, by breaching the ethical and moral standards expected of academic staff and students of the University, has undermined the profession and the international reputation of Monash University.
We therefore call for the immediate resignation of the Vice-Chancellor and for his replacement by someone of high academic standards and integrity.
Meetings of NTEU members will be called within the next two weeks to endorse this decision by NTEU Monash Branch Committee.
