Over 370 people endorse action to defend UQ Branch President
Hands Off Our Union!
Over 370 National Tertiary Education Union members at the University of Queensland St Lucia, Ipswich and Gatton campuses met on Thursday 17 September to consider what actions to take to defend the continued employment of the NTEU-UQ Branch President Associate Professor George Lafferty.
Mr Lafferty had been known to be an active spokesperson against the introduction of fees and had agitated for the University to hold consultations with staff on impending redundancy plans.
The meeting resolved that the notice of termination was an attack on the NTEU and its
right to organise, and demanded that the University has urgent negotiations with the NTEU in order
to ensure permanent appointment of Associate Professor George Lafferty at the University of
Queensland with no diminution of status or conditions.
A strong campaign to
support this objective was endorsed by the meeting, which will include a public rally for free
speech and union rights at St Lucia on Thursday 26th September, and may also include national and
international academic boycotts.
