NTEU STATEMENT ON TRAGIC SHOOTING AT MONASH UNIVERSITY
October 22 2002
The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) commends staff and students for their handling of the tragic event at Monash University yesterday.
Our hearts go out to the families affected, Dr. Carol Williams, President of NTEU Monash Branch said on Tuesday.
We are very conscious that some students and staff may be feeling upset or distressed and we would encourage them to avail themselves of the counselling services set up by the University.
NTEU Victorian Division Secretary Matthew McGowan went on to say, The union would like to offer whatever assistance it can.
If staff, whether union members or not have particular concerns arising out of this tragedy, they should feel free to contact the union, said McGowan.
We are particularly concerned at the pressures felt by counselling, telephone reception and security staff.
It is also pleasing to see that counselling staff from other universities have offered assistance to Monash.
