Tampa Day - 29th August 2003
On 29 August 2003, Tampa Day commemorations are taking place in some states as part of lobbying for immediate release of asylum seekers in Australian detention camps, an end to any planned deportations and for abolishment of the Government's policy of mandatory detention.
In Melbourne, the Rally for Refugees will be held on the 29th, beginning at 5.30pm at the State Library. We advise you to see the links below and/or email for more details on events in your capital city.
The NTEU supports this action as part of its broader social justice agenda and the work done so far at Branch, Division and National levels around this issue. Members are encouraged to present a visible NTEU presence at the rallies where possible. This is consistent with the resolution on refugees and asylum seekers passed at the 2002 National Council Meeting.
In February 2003, the National Executive adopted a recommendation for Branches to post the details of their activities on the NTEU website in order to publicise individual Branch activism on asylum seeker rights. These should be short paragraphs (of around 500-750) words, with any illustrations welcome, and no restrictions on the kind of activities that could be included. If it was done by NTEU Branches and Divisions, then we would like to hear about it! For an example of Branch descriptions click here.
