STAFF AND STUDENTS CALL ON SYDNEY UNI COUNCIL TO SAVE NURSING AND ORANGE
6 Sept 2004
Staff, students and nurses will rally later today against the Vice Chancellor’s plan to slash the Faculty of Nursing and Orange campus from Sydney University.
“The rally is part of the ongoing NTEU campaign to keep Nursing and Orange at Sydney University,” said Branch President Michael Thomson.
“It is vital that the Sydney University Senate doesn’t endorse any motions that will interfere with decisions of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC).”
“The NTEU urges Sydney University Senate fellows to suspend any discussion regarding the plans to slash the Faculty of Nursing and Orange campus until a decision is made by the AIRC.”
“Sydney University is a wealthy university that has a social responsibility to teach a wide range of programs.”
“How can Sydney University justify a College of Health Sciences without nursing given that nurses are 69% of the professional health care work force?”
“Critical heath care workforce needs can only be addressed through undergraduate nursing programs. We need more nurses, not less.”
Sydney University staff and students will rally today outside the Sydney Senate Meeting, Main Quad, Sydney University main campus, at 4.30pm.
