WHAT FUTURE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA?

14 September 2004

The staff and students of the University of Adelaide will have the chance to ask their Federal parliamentary candidates about the future of higher education in South Australia, at a forum being organised by the University of Adelaide Branch of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) tomorrow.

“The purpose of this forum is to inform University of Adelaide staff, students and the local community, about the higher education policies of the major parties in the upcoming election,” said Dr Rod Crewther, NTEU University of Adelaide Branch President.

“Higher education is a particularly important issue in this election for South Australians. All three South Australian universities have already announced HECS fee increases of 25% for 2005 and the University of Adelaide will be charging over $100,000 for a full fee dentistry degree.”

“The seat of Adelaide has the highest proportion of university students of any electorate in Australia and this forum gives people the opportunity to be informed about what and who they are voting for on October 9,” said Dr Crewther.

NTEU National President, Dr Carolyn Allport will be chairing the forum.

Those speaking at the forum are:

Kate Ellis, ALP Candidate for the House of Representatives

Jake Bugdan, Greens Candidate for the House of Representatives

Richard Pascoe, Democrats Candidate for the House of Representatives

Senator Grant Chapman, Liberal Senator for South Australia

The forum is one of many being organised by NTEU Branches at universities across the country, as part of the Union’s Federal Election campaign.
