Job Vacancy - Branch Organiser (RMIT)

RMIT Branch Organiser is taking 12 months leave, and the Branch is seeking a replacement for the duration of her leave. The position is predominantly that of a Branch Organiser, plus some administration duties.

The employment fraction is currently 0.5 but this may be negotiated up to 0.6 for a suitable applicant. The position is offered as a 12 month replacement contract.

It promises to be an extremely busy 12 months for RMIT Branch and for the Union generally.  We are seeking a person commited to the principles of unionism who can bring well developed skills in organising and communciation.  This is a challenging position and offers the opportunity to build on exisiting skills and experience working with a group of people committed to protecting and advancing the rights of RMIT members as workers and professionals.

The NTEU was established in 1993 through the amalgamation of academic & general staff associations.  It now represents more than 27,000 staff in institutions around Australia.

Job Summary

The Branch Organiser is responsible for the development and maintenance of the RMIT Delegates Network with some administration duties.  The Branch Organiser works closely with the Branch Executive Officer and the Branch Committee.

Reporting Relationships

The position reports to the Branch President.  There are no reporting relationships to the position.

 Key Accountabilities

  1. Work with the Branch committee to build and maintain a high profile delegate and active member network within and across all work areas of the university.
  2. Develop maintain and extend the RMIT Branch Delegates & OHS communication network and email list and publications.
  3. Provide accurate policy advice and support to a range of Branch initiated reference groups.
  4. Organise RMIT Delegates meetings.
  5. Assist with special projects such as recruitment including applications for National Office funding.
  6. Publicly represent the RMIT NTEU Branch in delegates forums
  7. Source and deliver training for delegates and active members in conjunction with State and National Offices.
  8. Attend various relevant meetings such as monthly branch committee meetings.
  9. Generate member reports from the database as required.
  10. Provide front office services, this includes receiving and responding to routine enquiries either by telephone or email.
  11. Provide efficient and effective general administrative support to the branch president.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Extensive knowledge of unions and their structures preferably in the Education sector.
  • Organising experience in a union preferably in a Higher Education environment
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision in situations that may require conflict resolution.
  • Ability to organize and prioritise complex duties and situations
  • Excellent oral and written communication/people skills
  • High level of computer literacy, including accurate word processing, and database skills are necessary
  • Must embrace and commit to a union philosophy.

 Qualifications

A relevant tertiary qualification and or experience in a union/higher education environment are essential.
