Sydney Federal Election Candidates to debate the Future of Public Education and Public Broadcasting
ACTU President Sharan Burrow will this Wednesday chair a forum at UTS Broadway where candidates vying for the seat of Sydney will declare their hand on their vision for Public Education and Public Broadcasting in the lead up to the Federal election.
The Sydney Electorate, which stretches from the eastern CBD to Leichhardt and across to Newtown, includes 2 Universities (the University of Sydney and the University of Technology, Sydney), the Ultimo TAFE, the ABC, and numerous other learning colleges.
The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), representing almost 2500 academic and general staff of UTS and the University of Sydney and 28 000 across the country, said the forum will give voters in the area the opportunity assess the understanding and vision their candidates have for the major public institutions that help define the community of the Sydney electorate and which are key issues for the Nation.
“The nature of the Sydney electorate is such that some of the biggest public employers which also have resident populations are institutions like UTS, where Federal Government Policy can have huge bearing on the many thousands of staff, students and members of the community connected with those institutions” said Dr Keiko Yasukawa, President of the UTS Branch of the NTEU.
“We invite members of the community to attend and quiz their candidates on the key issues of access, institutional independence and funding” said Dr Yasukawa.
The UTS and Sydney Uni Branches of the NTEU have joined with the TAFE Teacher's Association, ABC Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, Adult Learning Australia NSW, NSW Adult Literacy & Numeracy Council and UTS Students' Association to organise the forum.
