NTEU Seminar: Academic freedom, universities and the new terror laws

26 October 2005

“Academic freedom, Universities and the response to the new terror laws”

The higher education section of Education International, the international union body to which NTEU is affiliated, will meet in Melbourne on December 7,8 and 9, 2005.

As part of this event, NTEU is organising a seminar on 'Academic freedom, Universities and the response to the new terror laws'. The seminar will take place on December 6, from 12.30pm to 5pm, at the FEU Building, 120 Clarendon Street, South Melbourne, 3205.

Why the seminar?

Many countries, including the UK and USA, have already introduced anti-terror legislation, with considerable consequences for universities and their staff. The measures being introduced by our Federal Government, including the Anti-Terror Bill 2005, also have serious implications for staff working in Australian universities.

The seminar will feature domestic and international speakers discussing the implications of the laws being proposed in Australia and the experience of similar measures overseas, including:

  • George Williams, Director of the Gilbert and Tobin Centre for Public Law at the Faculty of Law, University of New South Wales
  • Associate Professor Jenny Hocking, Research Fellow at the National Centre for Australian Studies, Monash University, and author of Terror Laws: ASIO counter-terrorism and the threat to democracy
  • Joo-Cheong Tham, Lecturer, University of Melbourne Law School
  • Representatives from international higher education unions, including the UK and USA.

The seminar will include panel presentations and discussion sessions, and is designed to help inform and shape NTEU's strategy in response to the Federal Government's proposed anti-terrorism measures.

Who can attend?

Attendance at the seminar is open to all NTEU members researching and teaching in the areas of law, politics, international relations, terrorism studies and related disciplines and areas of research focus.

NTEU National Office is prepared to fund the cost of two attendees from each State and Territory, except Victoria, to attend the seminar, including airfares and any accommodation costs.
