INTERNATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION UNIONS MEET IN MELBOURNE

December 5, 2005

On December 7 – 9, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) will host a meeting in Melbourne of trade unions representing higher education staff from 32 countries.

The 5th Conference on Higher Education and Research brings together organisations from Africa, Asia, Middle East, North America and Europe. The organisations belong to the Higher Education section of Education International, the federation representing over 348 education unions globally.

The 5th Conference on Higher Education and Research will include sessions and roundtable discussions on:

  • Challenges for higher education in Asia and the Pacific,
  • The dynamics of global brain drain/gain,
  • Trade, privatisation and higher education, and
  • Academic freedom in the context of the commercialisation of universities and the war on terror.

Preceding the conference, on Tuesday, December 6, NTEU has organised a half-day seminar on Academic Freedom, Universities and the response to the new terror laws.

The seminar will feature leaders from higher education unions in Canada, United Kingdom and Asia, discussing the impact of anti-terror measures adopted by their Governments on academic freedom and universities in their countries.

This will be followed by a panel of prominent Australian academics examining the potential impacts on our universities and freedom of expression generally of the proposed Anti-Terrorism Bill 2005.

Both events will take place in the Ground Floor Conference Rooms, Federation of Education Unions Building, 120 Clarendon Street, South Melbourne.

Both events are open to the media.
