Candidates' Forum: Moreton (Qld)
23 October 2007
WHO CARES ABOUT HIGHER EDUCATION? OBVIOUSLY ONLY SOME PARTIES DO!
Wednesday 24th October at 1.00 pm
Environment 2 (Bldg N13), Room 0.05, Griffith University (Nathan Campus)
On Wednesday 24 October candidates for the seat of Moreton will attempt to woo the staff and students at Griffith University with their respective parties policies on higher education.
“We are looking forward to the opportunity to assess the major parties attitudes to higher education,” said Margaret Lee, the NTEU State Secretary.
“Specifically we will be seeking the candidates positions on the funding of our public institutions, the Research Quality Framework and the relevance of Academic Freedom. Also of great interest to the audience will be the candidates policies on student fees, student assistance and student representation at Griffith University.”
“Regrettably the sitting member Mr Gary Hardgrave has told us he has prior commitments, so we are rather cynical about the Coalition’s commitment to Griffith University which employs over 3,800 staff and has over 33,000 domestic and international students.” added Ms Lee, “This is the third Candidates forum we have done in Queensland recently where no one from the Coalition has bothered to turn up and defend their policies.”
Candidates appearing are:
- Graham Perrett (ALP)
- Emad Soliman (Democrats)
- Emma Hine (Greens)
- Senator Andrew Bartlett (Democrats)
- Senator Claire Moore and Senate Candidate Larissa Waters
- Special Guest – Tony Burke - Shadow Minister for Immigration, Integration and Citizenship.
MISSING are Gary Hardgrave and Senator Sue Boyce (Liberal)
