Early Career Development Fellowships - Applications Open in FASS

Posted 29 June 2012 by Belinda Viset (University of Technology Sydney)

Dear fellow members

The University has invited applications for the first early career development fellowships (ECDFs), in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This is the first of what we hope will be many more over the life of the current Enterprise Agreement and comes about following the effort of NTEU members who worked to establish eligibility for the ECDF amongst casual academics.

Clause 42.20.23 of the Academic Agreement, specifies that ‘of the positions advertised each year at Level A and B, 15 (FTE) will be made available as ECDFs’. This was part of the NTEU’s bargaining claim for improved career paths for casual academics.

When we signed the Agreement in 2010 we understood that this meant that the University agreed to make available across the University 15 equivalent full time positions for each of the three years.

FASS has now advertised for 2 ECDF positions at 0.5 for eighteen months. The positions are for a Lecturer in Media Studies and a Lecturer in Sound and Music Design. The closing date for these positions is noon on 5 July (See information below.)

While the NTEU welcomes this as a positive move by the University to meet their obligations, and looks forward to continuing dialogue with the University, the branch will be pursuing all options to ensure that further ECDF positions are advertised across the University.  Stay tuned for further information.

Regards

Tony Brown,

NTEU-UTS Branch President

[ -1 ] Our understanding is that the positions were in areas where the Faculty had identified as areas where there are gaps that they want to fill through the Faculty's workforce planning.
When the Union meets with UTS management next month, we will seek an update on what positions made available to ECDFs have been filled and which have not. Members should also share information they have about ECDF positions with NTEU.

[ +1 ] As a casual academic in FASS, I would like to know a)why these two positions were specifically targeted to these two departments and b) whether they have been filled. If they have not been filled, what then happens to the funding that has presumably been set aside for these positions? 18 months is a long time to advertise such positions, which I believe were won through negotiations between the NTEU and the university.
