‘Utopia Girls’ is a one-hour documentary about how Australian women won the vote, by Renegade Films Director, Jasmin Tarasin. Renowned Historian Dr Clare Wright guides us through this fascinating story. The fim will be followed by a commentary from Meredith Burgmann titled ‘Women and Politics – the True Story’.
What is Blue Stocking week about?
The first generations of women university students were called Bluestockings. This was widely used and whilst originally quite pejorative, probably became quite affectionate as women used the expression themselves to identify with being scholarly, inquisitive and clever.
From the late 1980s through to the last decade when anti-student VSU legislation was introduced, Australian women students held Bluestocking Week. This was an opportunity to campaign about and celebrate women’s participation in higher education.
So next week, be sure to bring your blue stockings back on campus!
