Information Day January 5th 2011

Posted 21 December 2010 by Bernard Doherty (Macquarie University)

A Message for Students and Parents Coming to Macquarie University’s Information Day on January 5th

On behalf of staff at Macquarie University, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) would like to welcome all of you. NTEU is committed to making Macquarie a leader in high-quality, student friendly education.

Unfortunately, recent events have raised concerns over the direction of our University. Conditions signed during the period of WorkChoices have led to a significant increase in the use of casual and contract employment. This means staff have less time to prepare for classes, meet with students and do research to inform our teaching.

More recently, many of our colleagues in the Science Faculty are facing retrenchment, despite the University recording record surpluses. This has meant cancelling courses.

For 18 months we have been attempting to negotiate a new agreement that will address these issues – like the agreements already reached at 30 other Australian universities. But to date our management have not reciprocated.

At our Information Day we are calling for your support. We will be handing out fliers and holding a brief event at 10.30am. We are committed to making the day work, so that you can all get the information you need about future studies. But we are also committed to maintaining the high standards you expect of us.

There may be some disruption to advising between 10am-12pm to allow people to hear about what is happening. Please allow a little extra time for your trip. We hope to see you on the 5th.
