Members resolve to reject Management's current offer.

Posted 21 September 2010 by Anne O'Brien (University of New South Wales)

NTEU members met yesterday and unanimously adopted the following resolution:

“This General Meeting of NTEU members notes the management “final offer” to general staff, on which management has indicated an intention to initiate an approval ballot shortly.

This meeting also notes that:

1.The University pay offer is below that offered at many other comparable universities, and fails to reinstate conditions of employment lost only as a result of the HEWRRs.

2.  Specifically, the management offer undermines basic award conditions affecting the security and redeployment rights of all employees, and further undermines employee flexibility in respect of annual leave.

3. The Vice Chancellor gave personal undertakings on behalf of the University, in the context of University requests that the Union lift bans on student results, that on regulation of fixed term employment, a solution must be found which is acceptable to the University and the Union, and yet has subsequently refused to allow the management negotiators to negotiate on this issue.

4. The Vice Chancellor also gave an undertaking on behalf of the University to provide a statement to NTEU in relation to performance pay which to date has not been provided.

5. While negotiations have been happening for nearly 18 months, for most of that time, management has refused to meet more than 2 hours per fortnight to negotiate for general staff, and saw no urgency to obtain a new Agreement.

In light of the fact that separate and earlier ballots for general staff invariably result in conditions for general staff that are inferior to those subsequently gained for academic staff, this meeting opposes the holding of a separate general staff ballot before the academic negotiations are completed.

This meeting nevertheless recognises that an appropriate compromise position should be negotiated on each of the major outstanding issues, and calls upon the management and Unions to initiate a further period of intensive negotiations to achieve new Agreements for both academic and general staff at UNSW.”

CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY

Consistent with the sections of the motion marked in bold above, NTEU remains willing to engage in intensive negotiations with UNSW Management representatives to reach a compromise on the outstanding issues, including modes of employment for Professional/General and Academic Staff.

In the meantime, the branch encourages all staff to vote "No" in the upcoming ballot. We need all hands on deck for this effort.

If you can help out more in the campaign over the ballot period- putting up posters, handing out leaflets, contacting your colleagues, please call Anne at the branch office on 9385 2479.

[ +6 ] Haha! We got an email from the pro-vice-chancellor a few days ago saying that they're doing all they can to ensure our results are released.

Seems to be a load of shit.

The crap pay and conditions may explain why all the academic staff are so cold, however.

[ -3 ] Go NTEU. Fight for what is right. Staff at other universities are reluctant to come to UNSW and fear their rights will erode at the their next bargaining agreement if UNSW management implement their unfair ways. The university world rankings dropped dramatically and management is in denial but will ask for a bigger pay bonus.
