Professional Development

All staff employed in tertiary education – whether on a contract, continuing or casual basis – have a right to professional development, and effective professional development strategies are essential to quality provision.   Access to and participation in professional development is an important issue for NTEU members in higher education, TAFE and adult education.  It is also in increasingly short supply.  The need for properly resourced, accessible and appropriate professional development informs all of NTEU’s policy work, ranging from the preparation of submissions to government on education and research issues to analysis on the impact of increasing workloads on staff.

Our specific work in this area includes

  • lobbying the Government and opposition parties to increase funding targeted to staff development
  • research on access to Special Studies Programs for academic and general staff (see Research Policy Committee Minutes – members only access)
  • enhancing access to professional development through enterprise bargaining
