ALRC Sedition Law Review

The Australian Law Reform Commission has been directed by the Federal Government's Attorney-General to conduct a review of the sedition provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2005.

It will take evidence from a number of groups about the impact and appropriateness of the sedition laws and will be completed by late April/May. It is hoped that the review can generate sufficient momentum to remove the sedition provisions altogether from the Act or at the very least put in place stronger safeguards against their misuse.

The Union has made a submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission's Issues Paper, which can be found here.  The Union will also be making a response to the Discussion Paper, released on Monday 29 May and can be found here.

Details of the sedition review can be found at http://www.alrc.gov.au/

For more information of the ALRC's review of the sedition provisions please contact Andrew Nette, Policy and Research Coordinator at anette@nteu.org.au
