Federal Budget

The Federal Budget represents an annual review of policy in every area of government operation, and an opportunity for the Federal Government to reprioritise Commonwealth spending for the following financial year. You will find below a list of NTEU analyses of the Federal Budget. These summarise the budgetary impact upon higher education funding.

Though the process culminates in the parliamentary speech delivered by the Federal Treasurer each May, there are many other critical events on the Budget calendar. The process generally begins in November with an Expenditure Review Committee (ERC) led by the Prime Minister or Treasurer undertaking an analysis of portfolio spending. The Treasurer issues a press release in November or December that calls for pre-budget submissions from stakeholders, with submissions generally due in late January or early February.

You will also find below a list of recent NTEU Federal Budget submissions. Notably, the Mid-year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) not only provides updated information to allow the assessment of the Government's fiscal performance but in recent years has also been often used to modify program spending. Where MYEFO has been used to implement changes in higher education policy they are included in the list below.
