All four of
the seats won from the Coalition by Labor – Adelaide,
Hindmarsh, Richmond and Parramatta – were seats targeted by
NTEU. In the six other seats in which NTEU worked, however,
only one experienced a swing that was lower than state swings.
WORKPLACE RIGHTS AT STAKE AGAIN

The most unexpected aspect of the outcome of the 2004 election
was the Coalition gaining a majority in the Senate from July
2005. This gives the coalition the opportunity to legislate
as it wishes, on industrial relations and higher education.
THIRD TIME AROUND FOR HIGHER EDUCATION
‘REFORM’
Federal Education Minister, Brendan Nelson has indicated that he
would re-introduce those aspects of his Higher Education
legislation which were rejected by the Senate in late 2003.
STUDENT TEACHING & LEARNING: WHO’S ASSESSING
WHOM?

The Government is planning the introduction of compulsory student
evaluations, published publically, and used to assess learning
and teaching performance and as the basis for distribution of
funding.
