Queer Unionists in Tertiary Education
[QUTE]
WHAT IS QUTE?
The NTEU recognises and celebrates the diversity of its members and their right to have their issues addressed by the Union. Accordingly, the NTEU supports the development of a national network of members who identify as 'queer' and who are actively engaged in addressing the issues facing lesbian, gay, transgender, transsexual, intersex and bisexual workers in the higher education industry and within the NTEU
QUTE AIMS TO
- promote education against prejudice, discrimination and harassment in the workplace on the grounds of sexual orientation,
- lobby governments to put in place comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation and equal treatment policies regardless of sexual orientation,
- ensure that our union observes anti-discrimination and equal opportunity policies,
- ensure that queer perspectives on higher education and workplace issues, such as intellectual freedom, parental leave, bullying, harassment and discrimination, are explicitly addressed through enterprise bargaining and other industrial forums,
- provide support and establish a safe network for communication for queer NTEU members.
QUTE HAS
- a national organising committee,
- an annual national conference,
- a QUTE discussion list where queer NTEU members can engage in free discussion about workplace issues of concern. It is possible to post to the list anonymously if you have a need for privacy. For further information on the list send email to mprobst@nteu.org.au
- State caucuses in WA, Qld, NSW and Victoria and contact people in other states. There are some branch-based caucuses, and in some other branches individuals serve as contact points (contact your Division for details if you are not aware of a caucus or contact person in your branch),
- a strong contingent on the steering committee of Workers Out! the Second Conference on Homosexuality and Trade Unionism, held in Sydney in October-November 2002 immediately prior to the Gay Games,
- a visible presence every year on the Labor Council float at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade,
- several projects in the pipeline, including a booklet with personal workplace stories of queer NTEU members: our difficulties, our issues, and our successes!
