Research Institutes

Welcome to the National Tertiary Education Union homepage for staff employed in Research Institutes.

Australian research institutes are at the forefront of many areas of medical, biological and other research. NTEU has represented members at Research Institutes for many decades, mostly but not exclusively in Victoria.

Many NTEU members employed in research institutes are involved in post-graduate research-student supervision or are paid on academic scales of pay. Many others hold joint appointments at Universities. NTEU represents these staff as well as professional and administrative staff employed in these research institutes.

For a list of workplaces covered by NTEU, click here.

Some research institutes have close affiliation arrangements with a university. In these cases, NTEU members are included in the relevant NTEU Branch. This applies as follows:

  • Members at Howard Florey Institute, the Ludwig Institute, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and Murdoch are members of the University of Melbourne Branch.
  • Members at Baker Institute and Prince Henry’s Institute for Medical Research are members of the Monash University Branch.

Members at a number of Research Institutes are covered by Enterprise Agreements negotiated by the NTEU. If you are covered by one of these Agreements, you can find it here.
