HDR Student Experience

Posted 23 May 2012 by Paul Kniest (NTEU National Office)

The Department of Innovation, Industry, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISTRE) today released a report entitled:

The Research Education Experience: Investigating Higher Degree by Research Candidates’ Experiences in Australian Universities.

The report was commissioned by DIISTRE and undertaken by the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) and uses survey data, focus groups and case studies tro examine the expectations and experience of postgraduate students studying at Australian universities.

While the report found the experience of most postgraduate students to be positive it also concluded that the risk of attrition appears to be most strongly linked to quality and continuity of supervision, and secondarily to collegiality more broadly.
