FWA Intervenes in Student Central Dispute

Posted 16 December 2011 by Josh Cullinan (Swinburne University of Technology)

NTEU called on FWA to intervene in an attempt to help resolve the Student Central OHS dispute. Yesterday afternoon, FWA convened a conference to attempt this resolution and NTEU can report we have made significant progress.

Swinburne senior management have agreed to:

  • in consultation with NTEU implement the 12 point plan previously proposed by the University, including:
    • TSAU staff perform predominantly back end work for the next 2 to 3 months,
    • SIC staff perform predominantly front end work for the next 2 to 3 months,
    • these staff perform alternate duties only where required to meet short term shift arrangements,
    • training to be put on hold for the next 2 to 3 months to allow staff to get through the busy period, and,
    • a range of other measures;
  • commence fortnightly meetings with NTEU to discuss:
    • the situation of school secondees and the staff left in schools, and what work will be done and by whom,
    • all health and safety matters,
    • all industrial matters,
    • any other matters NTEU wishes to raise;
  • the fortnightly meetings will include student operations senior staff;
  • the 100 work piece KPI will be shelved for 2 months; and,
  • the NTEU or University can bring matters back before FWA should the fortnightly meetings not resolve key concerns.

NTEU considers this outcome satisfactory, particularly in light of the last point above, and has proposed times for next week to conduct the first fortnightly meeting.

NTEU now needs members who are able to represent members in the Student Central at each campus, and the Schools at each campus, to inform and guide our discussions with management. The four representatives (or more if possible) would be responsible for reporting on key issues to staff and being a conduit for members to Wayne and Josh at NTEU. Please contact Wayne Cupido on 0438 333 665 to discuss this role and encourage your colleagues to take on the role if you believe they would be a good representative.
