Investing in Education, Research & Ideas with David Robinson
David Robinson, head of our sister union in Canada (CAUT), delivered an interesting talk at Trades Hall last week. We co-hosted the event with Catalyst, a progressive union research and policy group that NTEU is a member of.
David discussed a number of issues, including the Canadian alternative budget process to promote different government spending priorities, planned within responsible (and audited) fiscal limits. This might include, for example, increased investment in education.
Canadian unions have also confronted the ‘insurance’ (what we call the service) model or assumptions of unions and unionists, with attempts to embed an organising and engagement model. The talk highlighted both the common and divergent experience of organising in the higher education sector in our two countries.
I would like to thank David Robinson for speaking, and Catalyst for partnering with us to co-host the event.
