NTEU USYD Demands Management Comes Clean about the Job Cuts

Posted 14 February 2012 by Kate Barnsley (University of Sydney)

The NTEU rejects university management’s stated justification for their proposed job cuts. The NTEU met with management on the morning of Monday February 13 as part of formal dispute proceedings, and we were unsatisfied with their responses to our questions.

As a result, the NTEU is demanding that the university management provide the information it claims demonstrates the need for widespread cuts.

On Monday February 13, the NTEU Sydney Branch wrote to the Vice Chancellor seeking information including:

  • The costings of the University's infrastructure projects;
  • The costings of planned job cuts;
  • Information and data relating to management's claims regarding their budget forecasting failures, especially since these failures appear to represent a "decrease in annual growth" rather than a dimunition of income;
  • Information about the impact of management's proposals on insecure work and casualisation and workloads for existing staff.

We have requested that management respond to our letter by 5 pm on Wednesday February 15. Management’s response will be reported to the next NTEU Members’ Meeting on Thursday.

You can read the full letter below.
