NTEU USYD Demands Management Comes Clean about the Job Cuts
The NTEU rejects university management’s stated justification for their proposed job cuts. The NTEU met with management on the morning of Monday February 13 as part of formal dispute proceedings, and we were unsatisfied with their responses to our questions.
As a result, the NTEU is demanding that the university management provide the information it claims demonstrates the need for widespread cuts.
On Monday February 13, the NTEU Sydney Branch wrote to the Vice Chancellor seeking information including:- The costings of the University's infrastructure projects;
- The costings of planned job cuts;
- Information and data relating to management's claims regarding their budget forecasting failures, especially since these failures appear to represent a "decrease in annual growth" rather than a dimunition of income;
- Information about the impact of management's proposals on insecure work and casualisation and workloads for existing staff.
We have requested that management respond to our letter by 5 pm on Wednesday February 15. Management’s response will be reported to the next NTEU Members’ Meeting on Thursday.

All Staff Meeting - JOB CUTS AT USYD
Job cuts on the table?
The NTEU believes that University of Sydney management are planning to make significant cuts to staffing levels. Management has not denied this. In fact, in their responses to press enquiries, management have confirmed that there would be “a reduction in expenditure” next year.
Recently, the NTEU wrote to the Vice Chancellor demanding urgent clarfication of university management's plans. The NTEU is meeting with university management on Monday 21 November to discuss their proposals.
We reject any rationale for staffing cuts. All of us know, more staff and better resourced staff are needed to ensure a high quality student experience and top level research output.
Members condemn university plans
At a recent meeting of NTEU members, a motion was passed denouncing these cuts as unnecessary. Members believe any cuts are likely to impact negatively on research and the education of students and have a detrimental impact on staff morale and wellbeing.
All staff meeting: Wednesday 30 November
All staff are invited to come to a meeting on Wednesday 30 November in Carslaw 273 from 1-2. We will hear a report of the meeting with University management and discuss our response to management's proposals.
