Rally to support TAFE: Thursday May 10

Posted 3 May 2012 by Justin Westgate (TAFE)

The NTEU is outraged at the Baillieu Government’s massive funding cuts to the Victorian public TAFE system and calls on all members to attend a rally outside the Premier’s office next week.

Rally:

Thursday 10 May, 12.30–1.30pm

1 Treasury Place, Melbourne

(Outside Premier Baillieu’s office)

The Baillieu government’s cuts are:
  • an attack on the public provision of vocational education and training
  • an attack on affordable and accessible education
  • an attack on jobs, with hundreds of staff liable to be cut
  • going to lead to a less skilled workforce and higher unemployment
  • without precedent and without any mandate.

The NTEU is working with the AEU to mobilise action against these cuts. Action now can help to restore the public and student services component of TAFE funding at least.

This is not a stopwork but a political protest. We encourage you to attend the rally and bring friends, colleagues, students, community members to send a strong message to the Government that these changes are not supported. We need to demonstrate to both the government and the opposition the community’s demand for affordable and quality education.

Colin Long
Secretary, NTEU Victorian Division
