General Staff Classification Update

Posted 13 December 2011 by Josh Cullinan (Swinburne University of Technology)

Over 70 NTEU members have participated in the Classification campaign in 2011. On 21st November NTEU notified a dispute over the failure of the University to properly apply the Union Collective Agreement. NTEU has now met with HR representatives and has proposed a settlement to our dispute.

The proposed settlement involves supervisors providing detailed reasoned feedback to proposed position descriptions and where they are agreed, proposes senior managers are required to provide expeditious approval of the new PDs.
NTEU will discuss the proposed settlement with HR and we hope this will lead to a resolution of our dispute soon. In the meantime members are encouraged to continue to pursue their reclassification applications.

A number of members have now approached NTEU over ‘rumours’ about management actions in response to member applications for reclassification. These ‘rumours’ are deeply concerning for NTEU and we are now collating information to support appropriate responses to unlawful management actions. It is timely to remind all members that it is unlawful to threaten or take adverse action against a staff member because they seek to exercise a workplace right - such as a reclassification application. If you are aware of such action we recommend making a confidential appointment with Josh or Wayne to discuss the situation.
