It is great that Prof Steve Larkin is able to give the inaugural Patyegarang Oration here at MQ tomorrow however a quick look at his university’s (CDU) public information about Indigenous Education & Employment structures, resources and aspirations certainly shows how far behind MQ seem to be.
1. CDU has committed itself to a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) which is an institution-wide business plan that ‘publicly formalises an organisation’s contribution to reconciliation by identifying clear actions with realistic targets and is developed in consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, organisations and leaders. RAPs are also about embedding cultural change within a whole organisation through building good relationships, respecting the special contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and creating opportunities.’(http://www.reconciliation.org.au/home/reconciliation-action-plans/what-is-a-rap-)
2. CDU has a VC Indigenous Advisory Committee which oversees:
• Indigenous Employment Targets;
• Indigenous representation across the Uni;
• Indigenisation of curriculum across the Uni,
• The implementation of an Indigenous Research Agenda
• The introduction of Indigenous Cultural Competence for students & staff across the Uni.
3. CDU also has an Indigenous Knowledges Institute - (ACIKE) Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (partnered with Bachelor College).
No doubt some of these initiatives arise from special characteristics of CDU and its educational context but what is also clear is the high level of institutional commitment.
