Swinburne Sessionals Disputes Hit FWA

Posted 2 July 2012 by Josh Cullinan (Swinburne University of Technology)

Today NTEU had 3 separate disputes over sessional staff issues Heard in Fair Work Australia. These included the late pay dispute, a dispute over payment for all work in FLSS and a dispute over the massive increase in casual academic work at Swinburne.

Late Pay

NTEU has called on the University to pay members for the work they performed in following up their late pay in first semester. Fundamentally, we want to see the system fixed to ensure it doesn't happen again. NTEU understands a recent workshop was conducted to attempt to fix a number of problems. We hope to have a briefing shortly about the steps taken to ensure sessional staff are not paid late in the future. When we have more information we will contact members to advise what they need to be aware of, and who they can contact if there is any problem (as well as the union!)

FLSS HAY Dispute

NTEU agreed to adjourn this Hearing to allow for senior FLSS representatives to attend Fair Work Australia and attempt to resolve the dispute. The next Hearing will be conducted in a few weeks time. This dispute is over the failure of the University to pay for all work performed - including cross/secondary marking (moderation.) The University has also tried to argue preparation for delivery can include compulsory attendance at meetings without additional payment. If you are being required to perform work such as this without being paid please contact us as soon as possible.

Mass-Casualisation

NTEU lodged a dispute over the increasing casualisation of the Academic workforce at Swinburne. That dispute will be Heard in several weeks with senior representatives of the Higher Education Office in attendance in an attempt to agree on a remedy for the alleged failures to reduce casualisation. NTEU is currently alleging between 55 and 130 FTE ongoing academic positions must be created just to maintain the pre 2012 level of casualisation. We will report more in the coming weeks.

[ -1 ] Seems like we are getting strong support from the students for action next Monday (186 at last count) We need to capitalise on these sentiments and ensure that there is a major focus for their action on the day not simply a talking/strategy team meeting. We need these also... Any chance of Save Swin Lilydale badges like the TAFE ones in time for Monday?

[ -2 ] Great media coverage today on the long term health issues and long term Australian workforce sustainability... it is dubbed the MacDonald's model of workforce management for those of us stuck inside or excluded from the existing precariat.
