ACTU Secure Jobs Better Future campaign promoted in Wodonga

Posted 6 December 2011 by Virginia Mansel Lees (Vic Division)

On 28 October, unionists from both sides of the border came together to hear ACTU President Ged Kearney speak at the annual Labour Day dinner in Wodonga about the ACTU's Secure Jobs Better Future campaign - which has special relevance in the higher education sector.

As President of the North East and Border Trades and Labour Council I had the pleasure of hosting this very enjoyable evening.  Ged engaged the audience with her easygoing style through sharing stories of workers she has met while touring around Australia. Clearly many workers are facing uncertain futures due to increasing levels of casualisation and sham contracting.  Lack of job security is creating a bleak future for families, individuals and communities across Australia.

If you, your colleagues, family or friends have job security issues please consider making a submission to the Secure Jobs Better Future campaign.  Submissions and testimony will be used to try and force legislated improvements for all insecurely employed workers across Australia.

It is important to acknowledge that the tertiary sector is more highly casualised than many people realize. Nationally, the NTEU is engaged in its Invest in Australia's Future, Invest in Our Universities campaign as a way of highlighting funding shortfalls in the sector and we will be bargaining again next year for improved job security for our members.
