NTEU UNSW Branch supports NSW public sector workers

Posted 16 June 2011 by Kiraz Janicke (University of New South Wales)

NTEU UNSW Branch members participated in a rally of some 12 000 public sector workers against the NSW Liberal government's controversial new Industrial Relations bill. The bill undermines the NSW Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) and gives the state government the power to unilaterally set the wages and conditions of public sector workers.

Thousands of angry nurses, teachers, firefighters and other public servants rallied outside the NSW parliament on June 15 to protest the law, which has been described as "worse than WorkChoices." The bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly today.

In a statement Unions NSW said the passage of the bill will strengthen the resolve of the thousands of people who have committed to campaign against the unfair laws.
