NTEU member's film on climate change and the oceans, 'The Inertia Trap'.
Kathryn Kelly, an ANU member of the NTEU has made a film on climate change and the oceans, called The Inertia Trap. There is a short version on YouTube at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVsgakMdxfk
Kathryn writes: 'ABC Radio National's Breakfast program today (31 May 2012) featured interviews with a number of climate scientists expressing concerns that current climate models may be under estimating climate change impacts in relation to sea level rise and water cycles of rainfall and evaporation. These issues are covered comprehensively in the film The Inertia Trap, with climate scientist Dr Susan Wijffels (who was interviewed on RN today), explaining in more detail in the film and the extras in the film, about the rainfall and evaporation cycles over the ocean and the implications of the forecast changes. She indicated today that if there is a 3 degree warming, and the relationship they have found holds, then that could lead to a greater than 20% change in the water cycle - a change that would be difficult to adapt to, particularly in arid regions.'
The NTEU is committed to environmentally aware policies including encouraging members with expertise in environmental sciences to contribute to policy debates. We congratulate Kathryn and commend to members her film, which makes important aspects of the science of climate change more accessible.
