Sessional Staff Survival Guide

Posted 20 February 2012 by Juliet Fuller (University of South Australia)

Are you an academic casually employed by UniSA?
Do you work with staff who are casually employed at UniSA?

Do you supervise Casual/Sessional academic staff?

 If the answer to any of the above questions is "Yes" then you need a copy (or several) of the latest NTEU 'Smart Casuals' booklet.

 The booklet deals with a broad range of issues affecting 'Casual' staff which hopefully can assist Casuals to survive.

 It details a number of practical tips, industrial entitlements and gives information about the NTEU.

 All staff at UniSA, casual, fixed term or continuing are eligible to join the NTEU.

 All staff are entitled to vote in relation to the endorsement or rejection of Enterprise Agreements and it is crucial that more and more of the Casual staff at UniSA are brought into the information loop of the Union.

 You can get an electronic copy on the NTEU UniCasual website at:

http://www.unicasual.org.au/publications/smart_casuals/sa

You can also connect with other Casual/Sessional university staff from across the country via this site.

 If you would like us to organise some hard copies of the booklet for you, please reply to this email address and we can arrange for their speedy printing and despatch.

 In the past our members have:

  • included this information in 'New Starter' packs for new casual employees at formal or informal inductions in their work area;
  • distributed it to all current casual staff;
  • organised local meetings with an NTEU rep for Casual staff to attend at which the booklets can be distributed.

Please also chat to colleagues who might not be members of the NTEU and let us know if you’d like us to come to your work area to discuss workplace rights and entitlements.

In union,
